Rivera portrays the story Jesus related of a man who was accosted by thieves. He is passed by a priest and a Levite, who cross to the other side of the road to avoid him. A Samaritan, however—a man traditionally reviled based on his parentage—stops to care for the man and ensures he is safe. Rivera has included, among the layers of textile, mirrors for the faces of the four characters, allowing viewers to wonder whose story best captures them. Are they sometimes the man in need of help and assistance? Are they sometimes the Samaritan, ministering and serving when it is sometimes inconvenient?
“Serving God's children will help us develop greater love for our neighbor and greater appreciation and love [for] the Lord Jesus Christ.”
