While digitizing his family history, Gathro found this 1892 image of a young father, a chubby baby on his lap. The figure stares across time at the viewer, pride and trepidation on his face. With words from his own journal written in braille, Gathro includes his own thoughts when he became a father. “I didn’t know it then,” Gathro reflected, “but as I was caring for [my son’s] needs, he was taking care for mine—teaching me and lifting me up.”
“My sons were lifting up my hands, which hung down, and were strengthening my feeble knees.”
