In biblical times, the fuller’s field was a place where washers trod on wool cloth, stomping out oils and grime to clean and purify damp cloth. For Close, the fuller’s field is a symbol of mortality, where earthly struggles serve to purify God’s children. Close paints different representatives of humanity, each resting a hand on another figure in the scene. Through the love and support proffered in each loving hand, all are connected to the Savior in the center.
“In my version of the fuller's field, there is suffering, but also supporting and consoling, compassion and kindness.”
