The composition of this work resembles many images of the Savior as His body was removed from the cross. But Hawkes has changed the characters. The central figure is her mother, a woman who has fought breast cancer. The women in the piece who lift, heave, and comfort Hawkes’s mother represent the nurses, doctors, and friends who supported her on her journey. There is strength in the women who carry their friend. There is strength in the woman who is carried.
“[My mother] believes it is a spiritual gift of women to understand how to lift one another spiritually, emotionally, and sometimes physically.”
