They That Mourn

Christ promised in the Sermon on the Mount, “Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted” (Matthew 5:4). In the scene depicted, Christ mourns with a man while his wife, echoing Christ’s arms and actions, comforts their son. Their hearts are calmed; their spirits are steady. The three pieces of the work symbolize the three members of the Godhead, highlighting the sacred space created by mourning and comforting.
