The Book of Mormon tells of three of Christ’s disciples who, like the biblical John, desired not to die and instead to continue serving Christ on earth. In this imagining, these three disciples approach the Savior with their heads bowed in trepidation as they struggle to express this desire. Christ sees their hopes and, with an arm extended, grants their desire. Pierson included a child to honor the sacrifice of these three disciples, acknowledging the people they surely loved and lost as they continued their service.
“These disciples would watch their wives and children grow, age, and die, and see their posterity through the generations arise, live in faithfulness, or fall. They would do their work for the Lord.”
