When Latter-day Saint settlers arrived in the Salt Lake Valley in 1847, they were met by various tribes whose way of life Latter-day Saints would disrupt. Despite this reality, several Native American peoples—including the Shoshone—shared their knowledge of indigenous plants, including sego lily bulbs, that would sustain those settlers in 1848 and 1849. Fassman uses sego lily flowers to frame Latter-day Saint settlers as they gather bulbs. Without the knowledge of Native American tribes, Latter-day Saint settlers would surely have struggled.
“How much time do we spend as disciples of Christ lifting those whose hands hang down spiritually, physically, or emotionally?”
