James was baptized for the first time in Salt Lake City on 17 June 1854. This was prior to the arrival of that season's emigration, which proves that he arrived in Utah by 1853. His name does not appear on the 1850 Utah census, so it is likely that he arrived in Utah between 1851 and 1853. Further research is needed to determine the year of his travel and the name of the pioneer company with which he came to Salt Lake City.
The rebaptism record confirms his birth date and gives his place of birth as Manchester, England.
Elizabeth Hannah was rebaptized on the same day as James. She was born 28 April 1817 and was about 37 years old. She may have been the mother of James, but further research is needed to confirm their relationship. They are both included in the 1847-1868 Unknown Companies list.
Elizabeth's name appears in the 1860 Utah census, Salt Lake City 10th Ward, as "Elizabeth Hannahs." Three children are listed with her: Sarah, age 5; Elizabeth, age 3; and Anna Maria, age 1. If James was also her son, he had likely died before the census was taken.
