  • Carl arrived in New York on 15 June 1863 via the ship B. S. Kimball. His younger brother, Victor was with him. They likely were escorted by someone, but it is not evident who. It may have been Eva C. Elf, whose name appears just above theirs on the ship passenger list.

First documentation to place him in the Valley is a baptism in Utah on 20 September 1863 in the Moroni Ward. That record indicates his parents are "Andrus P. Achland & Lena." His mother, along with other siblings, made the journey to the Valley in 1865.
