  • The Hansen family traveled to the Salt Lake Valley in the Hans Peter Olsen Company.  Jens, Maren, and Lars Christian Hansen left Denmark and arrived in Liverpool, where their son Lars Christian died.  On the same day, Maren gave birth to a son, Joseph Christian.  Two weeks after Joseph was born, on 28 January, the family sailed on the “Benjamin Adams.”  They landed in New Orleans on 22 March 1854.  They sailed up river to St. Louis, and then on to Kansas.  In Jens’ autobiographical sketch, he indicates that their time in the forests of Kansas were full of sickness and death, with cholera taking hold in the camp.  Along the way, Maren died on 29 July.  Jens was the camp captain.
