  • George, his wife Sarah, children Lydia and George H. came from England in 1850 on the ship Argo.

George made several trips across the plains. His initial emigration was with the William Field Company in 1854. After staying in Salt Lake City for a time, he moved his family to California in 1855. Then he decided to move the family back to St. Louis. They sailed from San Francisco, crossed the isthmus of Panama, ported at Cuba, and arrived in New Orleans in the fall of 1856. After running a number of stores in St. Louis for a number of years, he left his business in the care of his son-in-law, George A. Alder, and attempted to take the rest of his family to Salt Lake in the John D. Chase company in 1864. However, due to a disagreement that he had with his teamsters, they did not complete the journey and returned to St. Louis. Then three years later, he captained his own company back to the Salt Lake Valley.
