  • He was christened "William Winward" but added "John" at a later date.  He crossed the Atlantic on the ship Hope in 1842 with his father (Thomas), and his younger brother (Peter.)  His father died at Nauvoo.  John William traveled across Iowa with a Samuel Snyder in 1846.  While in Iowa he lived with and was re-baptized by John W. Lasley.  (According to the Iowa Branch Index by Ronald G. Watt Lasley lived in the North Pigeon Branch of the Church, from 1849 to 1859; he was in District 21, Pottawattamie County in the 1850 federal census where his surname is spelled "Lastley.")  John William Winward married in Utah in 1854.  Additional research is needed to identify the exact year he crossed the plains and the name of the pioneer company with which he traveled.
