  • John and his mother, Rebecca, arrived in New York on 5 July 1855 via the ship American Congress. Though overland company records only list Rebecca as head of household, the notation showing she purchased 2 adult food rations, as well as the PEF records indicate that her son was with her during this part of the journey as well. Her also obituary confirms that she crossed the plains in Captain Thompson's train.
