  • John was a widower whose three daughters (Cecilia, Margaret, and Hannah) had already emigrated to America a few years before. Cecilia died prior to the overland journey. Margaret and Hannah traveled in the Abraham Smoot Company in 1852. He followed them in 1855, traveling in the company of his brother-in-law, Richard Ballantyne. His death year is confirmed by his gravestone.
