James was the brother of Amelia Ann Thomas Jervis, also of this company.
Portions of William Woodward's daily journal is included in Faithful Stewards--The Life of James Gray Willey and Elizabeth Ann Pettit. On 12 June 1956 he has recorded that James Thomas and Mary Somerville were married while on the ship Thornton. Mary's name appears on the ship manifest, but James' name does not.
By 4 March 1858 they had returned to Missouri where their first child was born.
James and Mary died in Missouri.
