  • John initially traveled to the Salt Lake Valley in the Heber C. Kimball Company in 1848 as indicated in Heber C. Kimball’s journal and John’s autobiography. 

    As a patriarch, he traveled home as captain of the John Smith Company in 1860 as indicated in the Deseret News article on 15 August 1860.  He traveled with his sister in this company as indicated in a Latter-day Saints’ Millennial Star article on 20 October 1860.

     Again as a patriarch, he traveled home again as a captain of the John Smith Company in 1864 as indicated in John Smith’s autobiography and an article in the Salt Lake Daily Telegraph on 27 September 1864.
