Henry was born in North Carolina (see the 1850 Utah census.)  He married Susan Jane Bird in Mississippi on 12 May 1844.  They appear together in the 1850 federal census of Utah.  They may have been with the Mississippi Saints who in 1851 went to California to settle San Bernardino and remained there until 1858 when they apparently joined other Church members in returning to Utah because of the army sent out by President James Buchanan.  Henry G. Boyle in his reminiscence mentions "H. Magee" and "Susan Magee."  Susan, according to Boyle, died on the way to Utah on 24 January 1858 at the Muddy River.  Henry re-married to Mary Ann Tame at Salt Lake City on 5 January 1861.
