  • Niels Peter was born to Poul Madsen and Ane Johana Christensen in Denmark. Niels Peter, his mother, and his older brother, Christen, emigrated from Denmark together in 1868 by way of the ship Emerald Isle. The ship roster lists him as being from Jetamark (Jetsmark). Niels and Christen's surname is listed as "Christensen" on ship records and mission records. "Christensen" was the maiden name of their mother, Ane. They were both born with the surname "Poulsen."  After arriving to Utah, it appears that he adopted his middle name, "Peter," as his given name. On his death certificate, his full name is listed as "Peter Poulsen."
