  • Worked as a teamster for the William Chapple family. In Mary Ann Chapple's autobiography, she refers to Joseph as "Joseph Paine." Payne was his mother's maiden name. The handwritten note "1/2 price" in the PEF ledger likely indicates that Joseph (listed as Henry in that document), would have received credit for half of his passage in exchange for his work as a teamster.

    As indicated in the PEF ledger, Joseph's parents, Joseph and Catherine Payne Sisam, and sister, Emma, traveled with him.
