  • Two obituaries in the Avery family state that they arrived in Utah in 1849. This is confirmed by contemporary land records because John's mother received a plot of land in Salt Lake City in 1849. A non-contemporary typewritten list in Journal History places John in the 1849 Taylor company but an entry in the book "Pioneers and Prominent Men," on page 892 under the heading "William R. Godfrey," says he traveled in Captain Allred's Company. Reference to both companies is correct because Reddick N. Allred was a Captain of Fifty in the Allen Taylor Company of 1849.

John appears in the 1850 federal census of Utah as a six-year old in a household headed by his mother Henrietta.

Date of birth comes from rebaptism records.
