"arrived at Great Salt Lake City Utah September 6 1855 . . . I driving team in a Merchant train got myself and wife here" (Ralph Smith)
The Smith family emigrated to the United States in 1855. They sailed on the ship Clara Wheeler. Ralph is listed with his mother, Mary, wife, Hannah, and siblings, Edward, Ann, George, and Thomas.
More research is required to determine which wagon company they traveled with on their trek to Utah.
Shortly after their arrival to Salt Lake City, Ralph's wife, Hannah, divorced him. He later married Hannah Hodgetts.
Ralph's mother and siblings trekked to Utah a few years later as members of the James S. Brown Company (1859).
Some secondary sources list his name as Ralph Usher Smith, however, there is no original evidence or primary source documents that support "Usher" being his middle name.
