  • After serving in the Mormon Battalion, James traveled to the Salt Lake Valley with the Jonathan H. Holmes/Samuel Thompson Company in 1848 as a captain of ten. 

    In 1850, James traveled from California to the Salt Lake Valley with the Amasa M. Lyman Company.  His name first appears in the records of the Utah Territorial Militia in December 1850.

    At the end of a mission to Canada, he traveled to the Salt Lake Valley in the Isaac Allred Freight Train in 1855 as Captain of the guard.
