  • Widow of Eliphalet Steele. Later married Edmund L. Brown. Laundress in the Mormon Battalion.

At some point she moved to California to be with Edmund. She shows up on several census records there. Then she eventually returned to Utah, possibly after Edmund's death in 1872. She is buried under the name "Mary Clark Steele" according to Find a Grave.

Called "Agnes" by Dan Tyler in A Concise History of the Mormon Battalion (126). "Agnes" seems to use either a middle name or adopted a temporary name to help distinguish her from Mary McRee Black Brown, wife of Captain James Brown. California census records show her name as "Mary" and do not indicate that the name "Agnes" or even a possible middle initial "A" was ever used.
