  • As indicated in the PEF ledger, Joseph, his wife Catherine Payne Sisam, and daughter, Emma, were traveling with his son, Joseph Henry Sisam.

The Mary Ann Chapple autobiography places his son (referred to has Joseph Paine--with his mother's maiden name--in the document) in the John R. Murdock company. The handwritten note "1/2 price" in the PEF ledger likely indicates that Joseph (listed as Henry in that document), would have received credit for half of his passage in exchange for his work as a teamster. This is further evidence that the Joseph Paine referred to in the autobiography is actually Joseph Henry Sisam, as seen with his family in the PEF ledger.
