  • Following years after his parents and sister, Samuel traveled with his grandparents, Alexander and Elizabeth Hill, to the Salt Lake Valley in 1851 with the John G. Smith Company.

    His father, Archibald Newell, traveled to the Salt Lake Valley in 1847 with the Abraham O. Smoot/George B. Wallace Company.  His mother, Isabella Hood, died in Winter Quarters in 1847.

    His sister, Rebecca Hill, traveled to the Salt Lake Valley with Archibald's sister, Mary Hill Bullock, in the Brigham Young Company in 1848. His other sister, Hannah Hood Hill, traveled with her uncle, Alexander Hill, in the Allen Taylor company.
