Charlotte Catherine Melland
Charlotte sailed to America in 1848 on the ship Carnatic with her uncle William Broomhead. She ship manifest shows their surnames as "Broomhead," but it has been incorrectly transcribed as "Broomhue." The New Orleans Passenger List clearly shows her surname as "Broomhead." The ship manifest also shows her uncle's age as 14, but that is likely incorrect, as he was born in 1801. However, there is no image provided of the original ship manifest to confirm that error.
The name of her birth father was Stephen Godfrey Watson Melland, but apparently, she used her mother's maiden name, "Broomhead," as her surname from the time of her birth until she married Abraham Day in Salt Lake City in 1851.
Circumstantial evidence from census, church, and genealogical records proves Charlotte traveled to Utah in 1851. In the 1850 Iowa census she is listed as Charlotte Broomhead, living in the Abraham Day household.
The inscription on her gravestone shows her name as "Charlotte Catherine Day," and it confirms her birth and death dates. In some sources, her middle name is shown as "Katherine."
She was rebaptized in Salt Lake City on 1 February 1852, the same day as her husband Abraham Day, and that record shows her name as "Catherine Day," and her birth date as 25 December 1833.
