  • Evidence from emigration, newspaper, and church (Perpetual Emigrating Fund) records proves he traveled to Utah in 1863. His surname is spelled "Marqvartzen" on the ship passenger list.

    A few years later, he crossed the plains again as a teamster for the 1866 Daniel Thompson out-and-back company.
