John first crossed the plains in 1850.  His name then appears in the records of the Utah Territorial Militia in October 1851.  On 31 August 1852 he was re-baptized at Salt Lake City and soon he left on a Mission to Great Britain.  In 1857 he returned to the United States on the ship George Washington with his family (where their surname is spelled "Hull"); they traveled to Utah with the Jesse B. Martin Company.   Evidence from church records and histories proves the Hall family traveled to Utah in 1857 with John's DeGrey in-laws.
