  • William emigrated to the United States in 1855. He traveled on the ship Siddons.

He came to Utah between 1855 and 1861. The first documentation to place him in Utah is his marriage in February 1862, prior to the arrival of that season's emigration. A family biography contends that he initially came to Utah with an 1856 handcart company, but there is no primary evidence to confirm that. The biography also asserts that he met the woman who he wed while serving as an out-and-back teamster in 1861.
