Alma (b. 1846) and his older brother Nephi (b. 1844) were two little orphan boys who's parents (Thomas Warren Hayes and Polly Jane Hess) had both died and were buried at Mt. Pisgah, Iowa. The autobiography of Alma states that in 1852, his uncle John William Hess accompanied them to Utah. However, the obituary of Nephi says he arrived in Utah in 1851. On the other hand the obituary of John William Hess, published in the Davis County Clipper on 25 December 1903, p. 4, says that he and his wife (both of whom had traveled to California with the Mormon Battalion), journeyed from there to Utah where he left his wife and "went east after his father's family, reaching Iowa in Nov. 1, 1848. . . . In 1849 John took his father's family to Utah, arriving in Salt Lake City, July 27th. Shortly after, moving to Farmington where he has resided since." It seems likely that this is when Nephi and Alma crossed the plains but it still needs to be proven. Further research is needed to determine the actual year Alma and Nephi arrived in Utah and the name of the pioneer company with which they traveled.
