  • Alexander and his three children arrived in New York on 5 July 1866 via the American Congress. His wife is not on this ship passenger list, but the Thompson company records indicate that he purchased 4 1/2 adult rations for the overland journey, inferring that she was with him and the children for that portion of the journey. It is possible they married on the ship (there are two Mary Smiths on the passenger list of the appropriate age) or shortly after his arrival to the States.
