Andrew Wood Cooley

  • Andrew arrived in Utah in 1863. He was baptized and confirmed a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on 1 May 1864 by John Pack Sr. On 17 February 1866 he married Mary Asenath Huntington. This same year he paid tithing in the Salt Lake City 17th Ward; this is where he and Mary were living at the time of the 1870 federal census. On 24 February 1867 he was called and sustained as the first bishop of the Brighton Ward, Salt Lake Stake which included all of the settlers and territory on the west side of the Jordan River, north of the then existing West Jordan Ward and north to the shores of the Great Salt Lake and West to the eastern boundary of the Tooele Ward.
