Margaret sailed to America in 1845 on the ship Palmyra with her husband Benjamin Lillywhite. He died on 28 June 1849 in St. Louis. She then married William Cunnington in St. Louis, Missouri on 27 July 1849. Her name does not appear on the 1850 Utah census. The first documentation to place her in Utah is her marriage to Sidney Algernon Knowlton on 28 January 1853, proving that she arrived in Utah by 1852. Further research is needed to determine the year that she and her son Joseph actually arrived in Utah and the name of the pioneer company with which they traveled to Utah.
According to a secondary source, Margaret sent her older son, Benjamin, to Utah with another family after the death of her husband, and she remained in St. Louis, Missouri awaiting the birth of her son Joseph, which occurred on 15 November 1847. We do not know the name of the family with which Benjamin traveled to Utah, or the name of the pioneer company with which he traveled.
In 1860 she was married to Elijah Elmer, and her name appears with him on the 1860 Utah census.
The inscription on her gravestone shows her name as "Margaret Lyllywhite."
