  • The Turpin family was at Fort Leavenworth preparing to travel to Utah when Jesse Turpin, husband and father, died of cholera. Eliza Ann, the mother, and the children must have made the journey in 1854 or 1855 because mother remarried at Salt Lake City in February 1856. Further research is needed.

The family went back east for a visit, this time with Virginia's step-father, Peter Van Valkenburg. They returned in the 1862 Brunson company.
