  • Evidence from census records proves that James traveled to Utah sometime between 1851 and 1855. He appears on the 1850 Iowa census, which was taken in September 1850. The first documentation to place him in Utah is the 1856 Utah Census, which was taken in February 1856, prior to the arrival of that season's emigration. Further research is needed to determine the year he came to Utah and the name of the company he traveled with. His birth and death dates are confirmed by his death certificate and gravestone.

He came to Utah with his sister Elizabet Heskett Allred.
