  • Although his obituary says he arrived in Utah in 1850, John actually crossed the Atlantic in the ship James Corner, arriving in New Orleans on 5 November 1851. Then, in 1853, he joined the "ten pound company" of Captain Joseph W. Young to cross the plains. Church ordinance and financial records prove he was in Utah before the immigration season of 1854. In the 1856 Utah Territorial census he was in Cedar City. By 1866 he was in Wellsville.

John was a currier and should not be confused with another John Owens of the same age, who emigrated to the United States, also through New Orleans in 1853 via the ship Jersey, who was a miner.
