  • John M. Vaughn was a medical doctor.  According to a letter written by his uncle, Amos E. Kimberly, " In the Spring of 1850 a company of men was made up at Fort Des Moines to go across the plains to California who made him a handsome offer to accompany them as their physician.  When he got to Salt Lake, being weary with so long and rough a journey and finding a good physician greatly needed there, he concluded to stop through the fall and winter and practice his profession . . .."  Dr. Vaughn was baptized a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at Salt Lake City on 14 July 1850.
