  • The Setchell family arrived in New York on 6 June 1866 via the ship John Bright. Only Thomas' name appears on the overland company records as head of household. However, the record also shows that he purchased 5 adult food rations for that portion of the journey, which would have covered himself, his spouse, and his children. His nephew, Elisha Setchell, also traveled with them on the ocean voyage, but there are not enough food rations to cover his overland passage and no other indication that he continued on with the rest of the family. In later years he is seen in Iowa in the federal census. Further research is needed to determine if Elisha made it to the Valley and then later left, or if he just remained in Iowa after coming to the United States.
