  • Mother and children arrived in New York on 13 October 1851 via the ship Western World, which was after that year's emigration season. In his diary entry for 9 August 1854, Samuel W. Richards mentions interacting with the sisters, Mary and Rachel Newton, whilst en route to Utah. This confirms that the Newton family traveled to Utah in 1854. Further research is needed to confirm with which company they traveled.

The first documentation to place them in the Valley is Rachel's rebaptism on 11 October 1854 in the 9th Ward.
