- Edmund Ellsworth Company (1856)
In the winter of 55-56 I received a letter from President Young calling me to lead the first handcart company across the plains. In March I was released to return home. Arriving at Iowa City I was put in charge of the first handcart company with cart built of green timber with no skins on the axels, or boxes in the hubs, with those we started over the plains about the first of July. We arrived in Salt Lake on the 26 th of September with a few deaths as is usual with companies with wagons. We had three wagons in the company, one of three mules and one horse, the other two, three yoke of oxen each.
