Explore dozens of recently digitized collections to enable your research wherever you are in the world.

Below, you’ll find July’s list of recently digitized materials to explore in the Church History Catalog, such as the 12th edition of Sacred Hymns and Spiritual Songs, the Church hymnal published in England for the British Saints. As we detailed in our research guide on Church hymns, Sacred Hymns was originally published in 1840; it featured a large collection of songs chosen by Brigham Young, Parley P. Pratt, and John Taylor. This 1863 edition, published by George Q. Cannon, switched out 44 of the original hymns, which were deemed “[not] well adapted for the worship of the Saints,”1 for new songs. Its 415 pages feature versions of many hymns that are still popular—although with lyrics that may be different to the modern reader—such as “The Morning Breaks,” “Joy to the World,” and “God Moves in a Mysterious Way.”
