Evidence from emigration and church ordinance records proves the Ostler family traveled to Utah in 1861. They sailed to America in 1861 on the ship Manchester, arriving in New York City 14 May 1861. A church ordinance was performed for John and Sarah in Salt Lake City 29 November 1861.
According to a secondary source "Charles" was not part of John's original name but he adopted the middle name in order to distinguish himself from his father and other family members who were also named "John Ostler." In the 1861 England census and on the passenger list of the ship Manchester John does not have a middle name, thus we identify him as John Ostler Jr.
