John Carlin emigrated from Scotland with his family. They traveled from Liverpool to New York City by way of the ship General McClellan. The Carlin family is listed on two separate company rosters for the 1864 Warren Company and the 1864 Rawlins Company. This could have been due to a recording error, however, it is also possible that the family moved from one company to the other while en route. The Warren company roster includes the names of each individual family member, while the Rawlins Company list of passengers is written as "John Carlin and family."

She is the Mary Carlin found in the household of her father John Carlin in the 1861 Scottish census and as a domestic in the Salt Lake City Household of John Sharp in the 1870 Utah census. The ship records and PEF list of the indebted show her name as "Jane." It is uncertain why her name does not appear on the Warren Company roster with the rest of the family. She later married Benjamin Malben.
