A secondary source states that Mary Jane came with her mother, Ann Brown Taylor, a widow, who hired on as a cook for "Mr. Morris," who was heading to California. The first documentation to place them in Utah is her mother's marriage in Salt Lake City 10 Jan. 1853. Further research is needed to confirm this information and determine the name of the company they traveled with.

Her name is listed as "Mary Jane Stewart" on her death certificate.
