Norma Ricketts contended that Thomas Burns went to Winter Quarters in 1847 with three others who did not head to Utah ("The Mormon Battalion," page 251). If so, he and his wife would've had to have started west in early spring 1848 with other Oregon emigrants well before Mormons began venturing west in order to have reached the Green River in July 1848. Rebecca is mentioned as traveling with her husband, Thomas R. Burns, to Utah in 1848 in minutes of his trial on the charge of stealing emigrant cattle held on 5 August 1848 in Salt Lake City.
