Samuel arrived, with his mother and siblings, in San Pedro, California via the ship Julia Ann on 12 June 1854. Shortly after arrival, his mother married a fellow passenger, Thomas Parkinson. They moved to San Bernardino, and remained there until they continued on to Utah in 1859. Further research is needed to determine which company they traveled with.
