Day in the Life

A finance manager is responsible for the day-to-day financial operations of an institution. They ensure budgets are used according to policy and are reported correctly. They use best practices to ensure expenses are accurately recorded in a timely manner. The job requires knowledge of accounting principles, attention to detail, and the ability to hold people accountable to ensure nothing falls through the cracks.

Loving to work with numbers, solving problems, and enforcing policy while building and maintaining professional relationships is necessary. A finance manager processes payments through the accounts payable system, makes journal entries to record expenses, deposits money received, reconciles accounts, ensures expenses are reported to correct accounts, submits budget items, reconciles payroll, ensures credit card expenses are reported properly, files tax forms, and various other activities.

Experience Pathway

A finance manager requires a bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, business administration, or a related field. A CMA, CPA, or MBA is preferred, and an applicant needs at least eight years of related professional work experience.
