Careers

A wide range of professionals make the Church History Department’s work successful.

In 1830, Oliver Cowdery was appointed as Church Recorder. He kept minutes and records of meetings and wrote a narrative history of the Church. In 1838 John Whitmer was appointed as the first official Church Historian with responsibility for recording the Church’s history. It was never the responsibility of the Church Recorder or the Church Historian alone to compile, write, and preserve the record of the Church. Thousands of clerks, secretaries, historians, archivists, and missionaries from the time of the organization of the Church to the present have participated in this task. Today there are approximately 300 employees accomplishing the work of the department.
