Day in the Life

Historic sites curators help identify, document, preserve, restore, and interpret significant historic sites. Visitor experience specialists help share historic sites by writing web articles, designing virtual tours, developing exhibitions, conducting historical research, creating interpretive plans, writing site guides, and training volunteers. Curators collaborate closely with other curators, product managers, publishers, editors, audience researchers, designers, and volunteers.

This job requires strong research, writing, and effective communication skills. A good visitor experience specialist can distill complex concepts into understandable, relevant, and compelling narratives. A passion for sharing history with the public as well as time management, problem-solving, and organizational skills are all essential to the work. Visitor experience specialists spend their days researching, analyzing, and writing about historic places and determine the best ways to convey the significance of historic places to diverse audiences. Individuals who enjoy both rigorous research and creative thinking would be well suited for this profession.

Experience Pathway

A curator needs an advanced degree in history, anthropology, religious studies, museum studies, or a related field. Practical experience at museums, historic sites, or similar institutions working with exhibitions, education, or public programming is necessary. Participation in professional organizations related to public history is highly beneficial.
