Day in the Life

Library catalogers are responsible for cataloging and organizing print materials. These are materials that are published and broadly distributed. Library catalogers provide classification, subject headings, subject analysis, and descriptions. A cataloger’s goal is to make items easily findable in our online catalog. Library catalogers work with contemporary and rare books, pamphlets, periodicals, audiovisual materials, and digital materials from all over the world. Catalogers work with conservators, collection care specialists, acquisitions specialists, reference specialists, and archivists.

This job is suited for people who have strong writing and editing skills and like to organize both information and physical items. It is expected that catalogers follow professional cataloging standards and internal local standards.

Experience Pathway

Library catalogers have earned a master’s degree in library and information science (MLIS).
